Welcome back everyone to the Crossroad Learning blog series, Designing Learning Sunday. I’m Instructor Dave and I will be your tour guide in the world of Learning and Development. In this blog, we take an everyman's approach to instructional design and learning, and then break it down into bite-sized pieces so that everyone can be an instructional designer, no matter the business that you support.
I hope you had a great holiday season and enjoyed the break, and that it was as enjoyable as can be! As I was off for a few days, I was able to spend time with my family, and our puppies. In October we adopted two Corgi puppies, and while I have never had a puppy before, they are awesome and full of love and learning. Did you know they "sploot". Apparently that is when corgis lay on their bellies and have all of their feet sticking out like Superman, and it's called "splooting". It's pretty funny. Anyway... let's get back to business.
This week we are back in the Crossroad Learning office and we are having some trouble with our blogs posting appropriately, we have DLS Blog 8 - Supporting Documents and DLS Blog 10 - Putting it all Together that are showing as posted, but I cannot see it when I view the site. So, I will have to follow up with tech support and find out what is going on. Anyway, let's keep going.
Over the last few weeks, we have talked about a few of the primary areas of instructional design to consider when designing learning for your company.
DLS Blog 1 – Is This Training Or Coaching?
DLS Blog 2 – Needs-Based Assessment?!
DLS Blog 3 – The Design Document
DLS Blog 4 – Choosing a Delivery Method
DLS Blog 5 – The Learning Objective
DLS Blog 6 – The Storyboard
DLS Blog 7 – Info, Activities, and Engagement
DLS Blog 8 – Supporting Documents DLS Blog 9 – Assessments DLS Blog 10 – Putting it all Together
We have discussed everything from determining if training was the answer to the learning objective, to assessments, and finally putting it all together.
As you can see, we will have quite a bit more to talk about. This week as we plan out our upcoming activities and content, I wanted to share something quick and easy to follow with you.
Attached below is a quick infographic that outlines the second set of the Designing Learning Sunday Blog topics. Use this as a reference point and resource. This week as part of our DLS Blog series, in addition to the infographic, please review the previous six Designing Learning Sunday Blog posts.
Later this month, we will begin our new blog series with "Instructional Delivery", commonly referred to as training. Just as the world of instructional design is massive and ever-expanding, so is the world of instructional delivery. We will outline the entire approach, chunk out the topics, and break them down into bite-sized pieces. We have talked about a high-level view of designing instructional material, and we only scratched the surface of learning and development. There is so much more to it than we discussed, and quite a few people who are far more experienced and smarter than I have written in great length about it. But yet, no one writes for the "every-man". That is where we step in. As I said above, in the next few weeks we will begin to talk about how to train people, the line of work you are in, the business you provide, or your industry will not matter. As usual, we will begin with a clean starting point and go from there.
Thank you for joining me on this journey so far, I cannot wait to get started on what is next.
Stay safe, wash your hands, and join us next week for Designing Learning Sunday - Training and Facilitation. As always, if you have any questions, or just want to chat, reach out, we're here for you. Always be learning,
-Instructor Dave
